Question

When is congenital biliary atresia usually discovered?

Answer

In typical cases, infants are usually born full-term without any abnormal symptoms initially and have normal stool color. Jaundice may gradually appear 2 to 3 weeks after birth and may sometimes be misdiagnosed as physiological jaundice. However, if jaundice persists without improvement and is accompanied by liver function abnormalities, a liver and bile ultrasound should be performed to rule out congenital biliary atresia.
