Question
How to Interpret Neonatal Hemolytic Disease Serological Testing?
Answer
The purpose of neonatal hemolytic disease serological testing is to diagnose neonatal hemolytic disease caused by incompatibility between the mother and baby’s blood types. ABO-HDN is caused by incompatibility between the mother and baby’s ABO blood types. Maternal IgG anti-A or anti-B antibodies pass through the placenta into the fetal bloodstream, destroying fetal red blood cells. This condition is most common in infants born to O-type mothers who have A or B blood types, and is related to IgG anti-A (B) antibodies in the O-type mother’s serum.
