Question

I noticed many white hairs on my child’s crown today while combing their hair. My child is 6 years old, and it’s surprising to see white hair at such a young age. What could be the cause? Thank you!!!

Answer

Hello: The amount of pigment granules in hair determines its color. Malnutrition, such as a lack of protein, vitamins, and some trace elements (like copper), can cause hair to turn white; certain chronic Consumable disease like tuberculosis can lead to early graying of hair due to nutritional deficiencies; some patients with long-term fever may find their hair turns yellow and becomes brittle or white. Endocrine diseases, such as pituitary or thyroid disorders, can affect the ability of pigment cells to produce pigment granules.
