Question

My baby is one month old, and I recently noticed a tongue coating on him. I’m not sure if this is normal. It hasn’t happened before, so I would like to ask about a baby having a tongue coating.

Answer

If your baby has a thick tongue coating, it generally indicates an excess of dampness. If the coating is white, greasy, and thick, this suggests a very heavy dampness. You can give your baby some Huoxiang Zhengqi Water or have them drink some dried tangerine peel tea. Additionally, you can mix ground red bean powder with ground Poria powder and mix it with water for drinking, as these can help expel dampness. If the tongue coating is thick and yellowish, this indicates not only dampness but also heat, signifying a heavy damp-heat condition. In this case, you can give your baby some chrysanthemum and forsythia tea, which can both cool the heat and drain dampness.
