Question
What is the appropriate time for a baby to learn to sit alone? Do babies who have been able to sit alone for some time require special medical advice?
Answer
Generally, babies should start learning to sit alone around six months old. The time for standing should be even later, usually around nine months old, to avoid early pressure on the lower limbs. Short periods of sitting and standing under adult supervision are acceptable. Before a baby learns to sit, encourage them to practice rolling over; before learning to stand, let the baby crawl more, which is beneficial for the baby’s physical and mental development. If a baby’s physical examination results are normal, there is usually no need to be overly concerned, as each child develops at a different pace, and some babies may learn to sit earlier.
