Question

The newborn is already 22 days old, but the jaundice symptoms have not subsided. Parents want to know if this situation is normal, how long the treatment will take, and seek effective solutions and professional medical advice.

Answer

Jaundice is a common clinical symptom in newborns, divided into physiological and pathological types. If a newborn exhibits any of the following conditions, it should be considered pathological jaundice: jaundice appears too early (within 24 hours after full-term birth, within 48 hours after premature birth); the degree of jaundice is severe, exceeding the average value of normal children of the same age or rising daily over 85.5μmol/L (5mg/dl); the duration of jaundice is too long (over 2 weeks for full-term infants, over 3 weeks for premature infants), or recurrence after jaundice subsides; jaundice is accompanied by other clinical symptoms, or serum conjugated bilirubin is greater than 25.7μmol/L.
