Question

How should children with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction be treated?

Answer

Congenital dacryocystitis often occurs due to congenital membrane tissue blocking the lower end of the nasal lacrimal duct or due to epithelial fragments causing obstruction in the lacrimal duct. In some cases, it may be caused by bony stenosis or nasal deformities. Treatment methods include regional instillation of antibiotic eye drops or massage, with the massage direction towards the nasal cavity, performed 2-3 times a day. Additionally, lacrimal duct irrigation and probing can be carried out, as these methods are effective and yield satisfactory results. Symptoms include overflow of tears and secretions, as well as the reflux of mucus or purulent secretions during lacrimal duct irrigation.
