Question

How should congenital syphilis be treated?

Answer

Treatment for congenital syphilis should be initiated immediately. Penicillin has little effect on children and should not be delayed. (TPPA: Positive, RPR: Positive; RPR and TPPA titers should be tested.) A diagnosis of congenital syphilis can be confirmed: it is categorized into early and late congenital transmission. Early treatment is essential, and the sooner the treatment is started, the better the outcome. With adequate and sufficient treatment for early syphilis, approximately 90% of patients can achieve a complete cure.
