Question

Is 20 degrees of exotropia suitable for surgery? Parents are concerned about their child’s condition potentially worsening.

Answer

Exotropia typically does not require surgical treatment. Most cases can be improved through corrective measures. When exotropia occurs, we check the patient’s prism diopter and determine the treatment plan based on individual circumstances. For patients with mild symptoms, corrective measures such as wearing a base-in prism can be adopted. Although this does not strengthen muscle strength, it is effective in alleviating visual fatigue, and most patients do not need surgery.
