Question

When a child shows difficulty in understanding during the learning process, suggesting a delay in intellectual development, how should one seek effective treatment?

Answer

The diagnosis and treatment of intellectual disability first require an assessment through infant intelligence testing. In China, there are mainly two methods of infant intelligence testing: one is the screening method, which is a simple, quick, and cost-effective way to identify children with potential issues in growth, development, or intellectual abilities within a short period. The test content includes the child’s personal-social adaptation skills, fine motor skills, language, and gross motor skills, suitable for children aged 0 to 6. If the screening results show any issues, further confirmatory intelligence testing can be conducted. The other is the confirmatory intelligence test, suitable for pre-school children, including tests like symptom words, 50-item tests, and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI). These tests can more accurately assess the child’s intellectual level and provide valuable information for subsequent treatment.
