Question
A boy, 8 years old, has been scratching his ear and saying it itches this week. Upon inspection, there is a lot of yellow earwax. He also has headaches and fever. How should we treat his ear infection and swollen ear?
Answer
Antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications can be used appropriately. Conduct ear secretion bacterial culture and use anti-inflammatory ear drops based on the test results. If the child mainly shows symptoms of ear pain, it is recommended to use a moderate amount of pain relievers to alleviate the pain. If fever is present, use antipyretic medications or seek immediate medical treatment. In severe cases with tympanic membrane perforation, surgical treatment may be required. Maintain a light diet and consume liquid foods mainly during treatment.
