Question

What are the early symptoms of Down syndrome?

Answer

Down syndrome is a congenital chromosomal disorder, also known as mongolism or trisomy 21. Its early symptoms mainly manifest as distinctive facial features, including wide eye spacing, a low and flat bridge of the nose, and a thick tongue. In addition, children with Down syndrome may also experience delayed intellectual and growth development. Approximately 50% of individuals with Down syndrome have heart defects. These early symptoms can be detected through regular prenatal screening. Currently, there is no cure for Down syndrome. If any related symptoms are found in a child, it is recommended to visit a regular hospital for treatment immediately and to pay special attention to the child’s care issues, adjusting the diet as appropriate.
