Question

My newborn developed jaundice on the third day after birth, and it has not subsided yet. The face, conjunctiva, and gums are yellow, with the body showing less yellowing. The stool is yellow and the urine is normal with a pale yellow color. How should high newborn jaundice be treated?

Answer

Most newborns will develop jaundice around 2 to 3 days after birth, with the latest appearance not exceeding the fifth day. If jaundice appears after the fifth day, it is considered pathological jaundice. Jaundice is usually most pronounced between 4 to 5 days after birth and generally subsides naturally within 10 to 14 days after birth. Infants with physiological jaundice are generally in good condition without other discomfort symptoms. It is suggested to use 20 grams each of Yin Chen, Jiezi, Dahuang, and Jin Qian Cao, boiled in water and used for a herbal bath to observe the effect. Additionally, during the treatment period, the newborn’s diet and care are also very important, and parents should ensure that the baby gets adequate rest.
