Question
My baby is 7 days old and has been in a state of sleep, with very little appetite. After 6 days of treatment, there has been no improvement. How should we handle this situation?
Answer
Brain damage caused by neonatal brain ischemia and hypoxia is often due to intrauterine distress, asphyxia, or neonatal hypoxia, with some cases possibly caused by other reasons leading to brain damage. This condition is more common in full-term infants but can also occur in premature babies. The treatment principle focuses on strengthening perinatal monitoring, preventing asphyxia, and timely rehabilitation treatment. Treatment measures include eliminating hypoxemia, using nasal cannula or oxygen hood for oxygen supply, or employing nasal prong CPAP or artificial ventilation to alleviate tissue hypoxia and ischemia-induced multi-organ damage. Special attention must be paid to the maintenance of brain, heart, lung, and kidney functions, and to preventing infections.
