Question

When does neonatal physiological jaundice typically appear after birth? Do not all babies experience physiological jaundice?

Answer

Neonatal jaundice refers to the condition where, during the neonatal period, an abnormal metabolism of bilirubin leads to an elevated level of bilirubin in the blood, causing yellow discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, and sclera. This is one of the most common clinical issues in newborns, but not all infants exhibit significant symptoms. Physiological jaundice is a temporary jaundice caused solely by bilirubin metabolism characteristics, usually appearing 2 to 3 days after birth, peaking between 4 to 6 days, and disappearing within 7 to 10 days. The duration may be longer in premature infants. Besides mild loss of appetite, it usually does not accompany other clinical symptoms.
