Question

Why do newborns often have eye discharge a few months old?

Answer

For children between 2 to 3 months old, it is a common phenomenon to have a small amount of eye discharge upon waking up in the morning. This is usually due to the inward growth of eyelashes at this age, causing friction and irritation to the eyes, leading to the production of eye discharge. Generally, as the child grows, around 1 year old, the eyelashes will naturally grow outward, and the production of eye discharge will gradually decrease. If there are no other symptoms, parents can use a warm towel to gently wipe from the baby’s inner corner to the outer corner of the eye to clear away the eye discharge. At the same time, breastfeeding mothers should pay attention to their diet, avoiding foods that may cause internal heat to rise, in order to maintain the health of the infant.
