Question
My daughter is 2 years old and unfortunately has congenital mental retardation. I know there’s no cure. I only want to use rehabilitation training and medication assistance therapy to enable her to live independently. Please doctors, what medications should be used and how should the rehabilitation training be conducted?
Answer
Congenital mental retardation refers to a condition where a person’s 21st chromosome becomes trisomic (meaning there are three copies of the 21st chromosome instead of the normal two) leading to the disease. It is caused by abnormal division of the mother’s or father’s germ cells. Congenital mental retardation syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21 syndrome, can be said to have no effective medication at present. Treatment mainly focuses on symptomatic relief, and can primarily include acupuncture, massage, physical therapy, and PT, to improve intelligence and motor functions.
