Question

A two-month-old baby has been frequently tearing and producing eye discharge since the second month, even without crying. What could be the cause?

Answer

Hello, the baby’s symptoms may be due to newborn dacryocystitis. During the process of embryonic development, the lacrimal drainage system gradually forms, with the formation of the nasolacrimal duct being the last. At birth, the lower end of the nasolacrimal duct has a flap (similar to a valve) that closes. This flap can open up on its own within a few months after birth. If it fails to open, it may lead to secondary dacryocystitis due to infection, resulting in the formation of discharge. It is recommended that you place your index finger on the lacrimal sac area (approximately on either side of the root of the nose), performing regular massage and compression three to four times a day, for several weeks to several months, which may open up the lower end of the nasolacrimal duct.
