Question

Jaundice appears shortly after a newborn’s birth, and the doctor suggests more sunlight exposure after discharge to help jaundice fade. How long should a newborn be exposed to sunlight?

Answer

Dear parents, it is recommended that newborns spend 30 to 40 minutes daily in sunlight, which can be divided into two sessions. Choose to do this before 10 am or after 4 pm. Please note that it should be done on windless days, and as much of the baby’s skin as possible should be exposed to natural light, including the face and hands. However, avoid direct sunlight to the baby’s eyes. Additionally, it is suggested that you let your baby drink sugar water daily, which can be beneficial for the fading of jaundice.
