Question

My baby has just been born, and the doctor at the hospital told me my baby has jaundice and asked me to take my baby out in the sun more often. But I also know that I can’t keep my baby in the sun all the time, so I want to ask, does newborn jaundice require more sun exposure?

Answer

Hello, for newborn jaundice, it is advisable to allow your baby to get moderate sun exposure. It is recommended to expose your baby to the sun between 8 am and 9 am and again between 3 pm and 4 pm each day, while keeping the windows open, as sun exposure through glass is ineffective. However, sun exposure is not very effective in reducing jaundice levels. If the bilirubin index does not exceed 16, it is usually considered physiological jaundice and there is no need to worry excessively. It is very important to control the timing of sun exposure, as random sun exposure may not help your baby’s yellowing fade.
