Question

My baby’s umbilical cord fell off one month after birth, and it was very dry at the time. However, later, I might not have continued the care, and the diapers were not properly placed, with several instances where urine got wet on the umbilical area. What are the causes of baby’s umbilical inflammation?

Answer

Neonatal umbilical inflammation often occurs during or after the cord is cut, usually due to improper handling at the time of cutting or postnatal care. Inadequate disinfection and improper care can easily lead to bacterial contamination and inflammation of the umbilical area. Common pathogens include Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Foreign body irritation may also lead to the development of umbilical inflammation.
