Question
My child has not had a bowel movement since birth. The doctor previously said it was normal and not something to worry about, but now it really feels abnormal. What is the condition of newborn constipation?
Answer
The main symptoms of constipation include: If an infant’s diet is too low, the residue after digestion is also less, resulting in fewer bowel movements naturally. Insufficient sugar content in the milk can make the stool dry. If long-term dietary insufficiency occurs, it can lead to malnutrition, with abdominal and intestinal muscles lacking strength and unable to expel stool, which can result in stubborn constipation. The nature of stool is related to food components; if the food contains a large amount of protein but lacks carbohydrates (sugar and starch), the stool will be dry and there will be fewer bowel movements; if the food contains more carbohydrates, there will be more frequent bowel movements and softer stool; if both fat and carbohydrates are high in the food, the stool will be smooth. Some refined foods lack residue and are more likely to cause constipation after eating.
