Question

My baby is two and a half months old and has been breastfed. Lately, his stool has been foamy, occurring 2 to 3 times a day, with foams each time. What could be the cause, and how should I treat it?

Answer

It’s advisable to pay attention to the observation of your child’s stool. If there are only a few bubbles in the stool, we shouldn’t worry too much, as this is usually caused by transient indigestion. In most cases, no special treatment is needed; just wait for a while to allow the body to return to normal. If loose stool is accompanied by bubbles and an unpleasant smell, it may be due to carbohydrate malabsorption in infants. During this period, it’s recommended to adjust your child’s diet, try to feed him with liquid or semi-liquid foods, and choose some light and easy-to-digest foods.
