Question
My newborn has only defecated twice in the first two days after birth, and then did not defecate for three consecutive days. However, the baby frequently passes gas with a strong odor. How should I handle this situation?
Answer
Abnormal defecation in newborns may indicate gastrointestinal issues and should be addressed promptly. If a newborn is experiencing difficulty defecating, parents can use massage oil to gently rub the baby’s abdomen clockwise after a bath to promote gastrointestinal motility and aid defecation. For infants over two months old, after a bath, they can be fed one to two spoons of freshly squeezed orange juice mixed with water at a ratio of 1:3. Orange juice is rich in vitamin C, which helps with digestion and promotes defecation. If the newborn only has difficulty defecating but is in good spirits and has normal appetite, there is usually no need for special treatment.
