Question

Dear expert, a 40-day-old baby has not had a bowel movement for three consecutive days, but there are no other abnormalities. What could be the cause of this situation? Should we be concerned?

Answer

Newborns typically defecate 4 to 5 times a day, while babies between 2 to 3 months old may defecate 1 to 2 times a day. For babies over four months old, it is normal to have at least one bowel movement per day. If a baby does not defecate for three consecutive days, possible causes may include constipation due to internal heat or improper feeding methods. It is recommended to increase the baby’s intake of plain water and perform abdominal massage. Gently massage the baby’s navel area in a clockwise direction with the four fingers of your right hand, which can help promote gastrointestinal motility and bowel movement. If the baby has started eating complementary foods, consider giving some bananas, apples, or dragon fruit, as these fruits have the effects of quenching thirst and promoting bowel movements.
