Question

When a newborn has an umbilical hernia, the navel area may make a water sound as it moves. What is the reason for this?

Answer

The cause of umbilical hernia is related to the anatomical characteristics of the umbilicus. During fetal development, the lower part of the umbilical ring passes through the umbilical artery and urachus, while the upper part passes through the umbilical vein. After birth, these tubes quickly close off and transform into fibrous tissue, with the umbilical cord detaching and the fibrous tissue being healed by scar tissue. This area thus becomes a weak spot. Most umbilical hernias heal spontaneously as the umbilical fascial ring gradually shrinks within one year. To avoid conservative treatment with a hernia belt, it is advisable to prevent behaviors that increase abdominal pressure in children, such as loud crying or constipation.
