Question
My baby is about to be born, and I recently saw on TV that some newborns have jaundice, which is hard to treat and makes me very worried. I’m a bit concerned and would like to ask how to handle neonatal jaundice?
Answer
Neonatal jaundice refers to a condition where, due to abnormal bilirubin metabolism, the blood bilirubin level increases, resulting in yellowing of the skin, mucous membranes, and sclera as its characteristic feature. Physiological jaundice appears 2-3 days after birth, peaks at 4-6 days, and resolves within 7-10 days. Premature infants may have a longer duration, with symptoms such as mild loss of appetite and poor appetite, but no other clinical symptoms.
