Question

I feed my baby in a lying position at night, and after eating, the baby falls asleep immediately without burping. Since the baby sleeps right after eating in a lying position, there’s no movement that could cause vomiting, so I’m worried. Should I hold up the newborn when they’re burping?

Answer

Generally, it is not recommended to feed a baby in a lying position. When a baby is burping, it is best to avoid feeding and instead offer water, which is more suitable. Hold the baby up and gently pat their back to help expel air, as a newborn’s gastrointestinal tract is not fully developed yet, and lying down can easily cause choking. However, if you are breastfeeding, there’s no need to be overly concerned, as the baby can control the amount of milk they suckle, thereby significantly reducing the risk of choking.
