Question

How can a neonatal umbilical hernia heal properly?

Answer

Generally, an umbilical hernia in newborns will heal on its own after the baby reaches 1 year old. If it does not heal spontaneously, surgical treatment may be necessary. Recovery after surgery is usually quick. Typically, the umbilical cord continues to shrink within 18 months after birth and will naturally close by the age of 2. Special treatment is only required if there are symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting (due to the intestine being caught in the umbilical ring), or regional infection. It is recommended to start treatment promptly once a diagnosis is confirmed. Conservative treatment, such as using a belly band to apply pressure and promote healing, should be considered for infants under two years old. For children over two years old, if the hernia opening is large, surgical treatment may be considered.
