Question

What are the symptoms of neonatal seizures?

Answer

The manifestations of neonatal seizures are often atypical, possibly including fixed eye gaze, nystagmus, irregular spasms of the face or limbs. In some cases, infants may exhibit symptoms such as pale or flushed skin, sweating, irregular breathing, even temporary cessation of breathing, or cyanosis. Tetanus is particularly severe in children, especially newborns. If the mother experiences leg cramps due to calcium deficiency during pregnancy, the newborn may suffer from hypocalcemic seizures. In addition, perinatal factors such as hypoxia, ischemic encephalopathy, intracranial hemorrhage, severe infection, and electrolyte disturbances can lead to neonatal seizures due to hypoxia and ischemia.
