Question

The newborn was diagnosed with pathological jaundice two days after birth, and the jaundice index decreased after undergoing blue light treatment in the pediatric department. However, several days after returning home, yellowing reappeared in the corners of the eyes and the whites of the eyes. How should neonatal jaundice be handled?

Answer

Normal physiological jaundice usually subsides gradually within about 14 to 15 days after birth. As long as the jaundice index is below six, and the baby can eat, sleep, and defecate normally, there is generally no need to worry excessively. The recurrence of a baby’s jaundice may be due to breastfeeding jaundice, and it is recommended to let the baby get more sunlight. As the baby grows, liver function gradually matures, and jaundice will naturally fade. If jaundice recurs after it has subsided, check bilirubin levels to determine the cause.
