Question
Do breastfed babies need calcium supplements? My baby has been experiencing this condition for some time, and I am hesitant to give medication arbitrarily. I would like to request advice from a doctor.
Answer
Hello, generally speaking, babies under 6 months old do not need additional calcium supplements as long as they are being breastfed or fed formula milk properly. If your baby is exclusively breastfed, then the mother should supplement calcium while the baby should supplement vitamin D. Under normal circumstances, if the mother supplements 1000mg to 1200mg or 1500mg of calcium daily, and the baby supplements vitamin D, it should meet the growth and development needs of a full-term normal baby.
