Question
My son has blisters around his mouth and on his palms, diagnosed with hand, foot, and mouth disease. How should it be treated?
Answer
Summer is the peak season for hand, foot, and mouth disease in children. Hand, foot, and mouth disease is a self-limiting viral infection, and mild cases generally do not require medication. In the early stages of the illness, most children will experience fever; symptomatic and antipyretic treatment is necessary for severe fever. Typical vesicular rashes appear during the acute phase of the disease. If itching is severe, oral loratadine can be taken. In clinical cases where severe complications or other complex infections occur, corresponding symptomatic treatment should be administered to control the occurrence of complications rather than simply targeting hand, foot, and mouth disease itself.
