Question

My child just gave birth. This child has recently developed jaundice. The jaundice level is 8.1, and the doctor has recommended treatment and observation. I am very worried, so I would like to inquire, is a jaundice level of 8.1 normal for newborns?

Answer

Newborn jaundice typically appears around 3 days after birth and disappears in about 2 weeks. A transcutaneous bilirubin level below 12 is considered normal. If your child is now 12 years old, this level is not too high. It is recommended that you can give your child some probiotics and expose them to appropriate sunlight. Check the baby’s jaundice level again after three days; if it continues to increase, consider giving the baby jaundice medication or blue light therapy to reduce the jaundice.
