It’s estimated that the first stool after birth scared parents quite a bit, with a dark green mass that made fathers rush to call the doctor. Newborn babies, even if they haven’t eaten anything, will pass dark green meconium within 6 to 12 hours after birth. Whether it’s the baby showing affection for its mother or not wanting to dirty the amniotic fluid it has been swallowing day after day, the baby must come out of the mother’s womb before it will pass its first stool in life. The accumulated meconium from 9 months of gestation must be cleared out through frequent bowel movements, generally lasting 2 to 3 days, with 3 to 5 bowel movements per day until the dark green color disappears.
