Question

Starting from the third day after birth, the newborn begins to exhibit a yellowish discoloration of the skin, which the family suspects might be jaundice. How should neonatal physiological jaundice be handled?

Answer

Neonatal jaundice can usually heal naturally, with increased intake of sugar water helping to accelerate the jaundice’s disappearance, usually without the need for special treatment. However, if the degree of jaundice is severe, phototherapy should be administered and further examination conducted to rule out the possibility of pathological jaundice. Physiological jaundice will fade on its own, and it is recommended to continue breastfeeding and to give the baby an appropriate amount of plain water, with added glucose to promote the jaundice’s fading. Additionally, allowing the baby to bask in sunlight through a glass window can also help improve the jaundice.
