Question

My baby is 35 days old, and the jaundice hasn’t subsided. I want to know if they need to be hospitalized for treatment?

Answer

Your child has had jaundice for 35 days. It is recommended to consider hospital treatment or not treating the jaundice. It’s best to evaluate the significance of the jaundice. Newborn jaundice generally falls into two categories: physiological jaundice and pathological jaundice. Physiological jaundice is a normal physiological phenomenon. Due to the metabolic characteristics of bilirubin in newborns, approximately 60% of full-term infants and over 80% of premature infants may develop jaundice within 3-5 days after birth, but overall, they are in good condition. The jaundice in full-term infants usually resolves within 14 days, while that in premature infants can delay until the jaundice completely resolves within 3-4 weeks.
