Question

My child is a preemie and has a weaker constitution, so what kind of complications can preterm babies have?

Answer

The most severe issue preterm babies may face is cerebral palsy, which is a quite serious condition. Many parents mistakenly believe that cerebral palsy leads to intellectual disability, but in fact, the intelligence of most preterm babies is normal; they may just experience motor impairments and abnormal posture. The incidence rate of cerebral palsy is approximately 2-3%, while the likelihood of preterm babies developing the condition is about one in every thousand. However, if treatment is started early after birth, in many cases, the child will not have any lasting complications.
