Question
A friend’s child has been diagnosed with Down Syndrome. How should it be treated, and what precautions should be taken on a daily basis?
Answer
The screening for Down Syndrome itself carries certain risks and uncertainties. It is recommended: If there are high-risk situations, it is best to undergo amniocentesis. If a diagnosis of trisomy 21 is confirmed, the child’s life and family will be affected. Currently, amniocentesis is the only option, but it comes with relatively high risks. Amniocentesis should only be performed when the risk from blood tests is high, to ensure the safety of low-risk patients. High risk does not necessarily mean the presence of Down Syndrome. Amniocentesis is relatively accurate and reliable.
