Question

A neighbor’s child has been diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Could you please inquire about the appropriate treatment for such a child?

Answer

Down Syndrome, also known as trisomy 21 or Down’s syndrome, is a common birth defect disease caused by chromosomal abnormalities in children. This condition is characterized by intellectual disability, delayed growth and development, and distinct facial features, and may be accompanied by various malformations. In our country, the incidence rate of Down Syndrome among live births is approximately 0.5‰ to 0.6‰, with a male-to-female ratio of 3 to 2, and 60% of affected children experience early pregnancy loss. Currently, there is no effective treatment for Down Syndrome.
