Question
What are the characteristics of neonatal jaundice?
Answer
Neonatal jaundice may appear within 24 hours after birth or persist, even worsening after it subsides. Pathological neonatal jaundice can also lead to other complications, such as kernicterus. When jaundice occurs, the baby’s skin and eyes will present with a distinct yellowing, and may be accompanied by drowsiness, reduced suckling strength, or refusal to breastfeed, as well as decreased muscle tone. If not treated promptly, it may develop into more severe symptoms such as seizures, screaming, and respiratory failure. Some infants may die due to respiratory failure, while surviving infants may suffer from intellectual disabilities or cerebral palsy as sequelae.
