Question

My baby is 5 days old, and today’s bilirubin test result is 18. The doctor says it’s a bit serious and suggests hospitalization. I don’t want to go to the hospital and have refused admission.

Answer

If a newborn’s bilirubin level exceeds the normal range and the psychological care is poor, active symptomatic treatment should be adopted, primarily concerned with bilirubin encephalopathy. Mainly, blue light therapy or silymarin granules for oral administration are used. In severe cases, symptomatic treatments such as albumin and immunoglobulin are required. If it is caused by infection, anti-infection treatment is necessary. Skin care can be enhanced if necessary. If seizures or spasms occur, only nutritional nerve treatment, oxygen therapy, and other symptomatic treatments are needed.
