Question
My baby was born on November 6th, and on November 21st, the bilirubin level reached 289, and he was admitted for blue light therapy. He was discharged on November 26th, but now I’m really at my wit’s end. First, I can’t figure out what’s causing the baby’s jaundice to come back. We’ve already had the blue light therapy; what else can we do?
Answer
This condition in infants is an indirect bilirubin elevation jaundice, not breastmilk jaundice. Guidelines: Indirect bilirubin elevation is common in hemolytic jaundice and liver cell jaundice, often seen in hemolytic diseases, neonatal jaundice, or blood transfusion errors. Indirect bilirubin levels in patients with hepatitis and liver cirrhosis will also rise. It is recommended to consult a pediatric specialist at the hospital for a diagnosis before taking medication. Breastfeeding can continue.
