Question
My son was born full-term and is otherwise healthy, weighing about six or seven pounds at birth. However, he always seems yellowish. Experienced elders told me this is jaundice. So I would like to ask experts if full-term newborn jaundice is normal and what should be done about it?
Answer
Full-term newborn jaundice is physiological and best observed. Generally, it can disappear on its own. In the meantime, you should ensure your child gets plenty of rest and drinks water. You can also give your child glucose water to help jaundice fade. If it doesn’t keep fading, it might be pathological jaundice. You need to take medication properly. Additionally, it’s recommended to have regular check-ups and seek hospital treatment for phototherapy if necessary.
