Question

My child was premature and spent a long time in the hospital. Due to the prematurity, the jaundice was finally resolved before discharge. However, I’ve noticed that my child has developed some jaundice again recently. I would like to consult with an expert: Is neonatal jaundice prone to recurrence?

Answer

Generally speaking, physiological jaundice does not recur, but the possibility of pathological jaundice is relatively high, especially for neonatal jaundice which tends to recur more frequently and for a longer duration. If your child experiences recurrent jaundice, it is advisable to measure the bilirubin levels at the hospital. If the bilirubin levels exceed the normal range, it is recommended to administer jaundice-reducing medication and undergo phototherapy treatment.
