Question

At what level does a newborn’s jaundice index need to reach before they can receive vaccinations? What should be done if other children in the household have never had this condition?

Answer

If a newborn’s jaundice is mild and their jaundice index is below 6, and the baby is in good spirits, vaccination can be considered. However, for infants with moderate to severe jaundice, especially those showing symptoms such as lack of energy, drowsiness, or seizures, vaccination is not recommended. In such cases, blue light therapy or oral administration of silymarin granules for symptomatic treatment should be adopted. If jaundice is caused by infection, antibiotics or antiviral medications should be used for symptomatic treatment.
