Question

My baby is now 3 months old and vomits shortly after feeding, sometimes quite a lot and even chokes. How should I handle the issue of baby vomiting?

Answer

Don’t worry too much, as baby spitting up is a relatively common phenomenon. Babies’ stomachs are not positioned vertically like in older children and adults; they are in a horizontal position. This makes the stomach smaller and able to hold less food. Additionally, due to the low muscle tension in the baby’s esophagus, the lower esophageal sphincter is relaxed and not tightly closed, making it easier for food to be pushed out, causing vomiting. Don’t worry if your baby vomits. Gently pat your baby’s back to help them expel milk from the throat. Vomiting is not a big issue, but if the mother does not handle it promptly, it may lead to the baby choking. Proper feeding posture and burping after feeding are crucial.
