Question
I’m pregnant, and today I read in the news that the probability of neonates developing hypocalcemia is relatively high, and I’m worried about my child having this problem. What are the cautionary notes for neonatal hypocalcemia?
Answer
By taking preventive measures, the incidence of neonatal hypocalcemia in pregnant women is relatively low. Firstly, attention should be paid to health preventive measures, including maintaining good hygiene. Secondly, both pregnant women and infants should regularly expose themselves to sunlight to increase nutrition. When cramps in the calf muscles are found in the late stages of pregnancy, blood calcium levels should be checked and calcium supplements should be taken. In addition, strengthen perinatal care, regular prenatal examinations, prevent premature birth, strengthen labor monitoring, prevent and treat postpartum vitamin D and calcium deficiency, and initiate breastfeeding within 6 hours after birth. If there is no breast milk available, formula milk should be provided.
