Question

Can neonatal ABO hemolytic disease be completely cured? How should it be treated?

Answer

Neonatal ABO incompatibility hemolytic disease occurs only at birth. Once the O antibodies from the mother are depleted within the baby’s body, ABO incompatibility hemolytic disease will no longer occur. Therefore, ABO incompatibility hemolytic disease can be completely resolved. However, the jaundice caused by hemolysis must be actively treated to prevent high levels of jaundice from affecting the brain and leading to hyperbilirubinemia brain disease. If the hemolysis is severe and leads to anemia in the baby, it may be necessary to administer a moderate amount of blood transfusion.
