Question
A 25-day-old infant began to exhibit symptoms of abdominal distension and restlessness at 20 days old. After two days of treatment with baby formula and lactase, the symptoms were somewhat relieved. However, three days after discontinuing medication, the abdominal distension recurred along with restlessness. Additionally, the infant’s breathing appeared rapid, and a doctor diagnosed it as a tracheal issue, but after several days of treatment, the symptoms did not improve.
Answer
For the aforementioned symptoms in the infant, it cannot be ruled out that they are caused by gastrointestinal problems due to newborn pneumonia. It is recommended that parents bring the baby to a pediatric department for a review to further treat the condition. Moreover, the infant has been diagnosed with newborn asphyxia, pneumonia, mild hypoxic encephalopathy, a 3.5mm patent ductus arteriosus, and slightly elevated jaundice levels. Currently, oxygen therapy and antibacterial anti-inflammatory treatment are needed.
